Unique in its simplicity, the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial is one of the easily recognizable memorials in Washington, D.C. The Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial was spearheaded by a veteran of the Vietnam War who wanted to be sure that his comrades’ sacrifice was never forgotten. Though the designer and the design were controversial at the time of construction, construction was completed in October 1982, and the official dedication of the memorial took place two days after Veteran’s Day of the same year.
Each name and symbol on The Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial remembers the service and sacrifice of the men and women who gave their lives to protect freedom, both here in the United States and in Vietnam.
